Joseph Brewer (Tsalagi/Oglala Lakota) is an Associate Professor of Environmental Studies and the Director of Indigenous Studies Program at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. in Arid Lands Resource Sciences from the University of Arizona, where he was a Sloan Scholar. He previously served as acting dean in the School of Natural and Social Sciences at Haskell Indian Nations University. His research interests include natural resources management for American Indian and Alaskan Natives, energy sovereignty for American Indian tribes and Alaskan Natives, the Federally Recognized Tribal Extension Program (FRTEP), Indian land tenure, and how local/regional Indigenous knowledge informs state/federal natural resources management offices.
