Associate Investigator Leif Abrell Wins Photo Contest

Feb. 3, 2013

The University of Arizona (UA) Water Resources Research Center held a call in late 2012 for a photo contest. The theme was, “Water: the Human Element,” and contestants were asked to capture a photo in the state of Arizona that demonstrates a unique interpretation of our most precious resource, water. In 2013, UA Superfund Research Program Associate Investigator Dr. Leif Abrell (Hazard Identification Core; Arizona Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants) was announced as one of five contest winners.

The winning photo features his son swinging on a rope at a place called “The Crack” in Sabino Canyon in Tucson, AZ last summer. Dr. Abrell remarks that through years of living in southern Arizona, “I have realized how important it is for me to locate fresh water sources for recreation… I was amazed that in the middle of the summer in Tucson we could have this paradisiacal swimming hole all to ourselves.” He used a digital camera to capture the photo while standing in chest-deep water.

Congratulations, Leif, and thanks for showing us a great place to cool off!
