CESM had a face-to-face meeting in Tucson

Dec. 1, 2012

The recently established Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining (CESM) had its first Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) face-to-face meeting last October 11, 2012 in Tucson at the Marriott University Park Hotel.

The new Center is part of the Lowell Institute for Mineral Resources at the University of Arizona. The goal of the Center is to work with the Mining industry groups to learn about and address their key problems associated with environmental issues related to mining. The three areas of concern highlighted by the TAC were: Air quality (dust); water use and quality; and reclamation of mining wastes. CESM will lead the effort to develop innovative technologies to address these mining issues and will act as a resource for the mining community on these issues.

Members of the CESM TAC include: George Fennemore (Barick Gold), Chad Fretz (Freeport McMoRan Copper &Gold), Gail Heath (Idaho National Laboratory), Kent Johnejack (Golder Associates Inc.), Thomas Klempel (Asarco- Grupo Mexico), Brett Lindsay (Salt River Material Group), Casey McKeon (Resolution Copper Mining), Vern PFannenstiel (Peabody Energy), Steve Trussell (Arizona Rock Products Association) and Becky Wood (Teichert Materials).
