Aug. 14, 2013

Denise Moreno Ramírez, Community Engagement Coordinator for the University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) recently travelled to Boston, MA to attend a conference and give a guest lecture.

The “2013 Community Involvement Training Conference: The Next Generation of Community Involvement” was hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and held in Boston, MA July 30 – August 1. It was designed to both inform and train EPA staff as well as Agency stakeholders and partners in best practices to enhance community involvement. In addition to attending sessions, Moreno Ramírez participated in the Mystic River field trip that demonstrated a grassroots, community project that is ensuring better water quality in the watershed.  She also presented a poster on current UA SRP community engagement and research translation activities.

While in Boston, Moreno Ramírez visited former UA SRP colleague Dr. Monica Ramírez-Andreotta at Northeastern University. Ramírez-Andreotta is now an Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at Northeastern and one of her first assignments is to co-teach a graduate-level class entitled “Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) – Environmental Health” with Dr. Sara Wylie. They invited Moreno Ramírez to deliver a guest lecture on her CBPR experiences working with promotoras in the Arizona-Mexico border region. The objective of the presentation was to provide graduate students with a case study of how CBPR plays out in the real world, including successes and barriers in working with communities.
