Invited Speaker Opens 2014-2015 Colloquium

Aug. 28, 2014

Dr. Laurie Lapat-Polasko, Principle with the ENVIRON consulting firm in Phoenix, AZ, opened the 2014-2015 University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) Colloquium series with an engaging talk. She described her experiences working at chlorinated solvent-contaminated groundwater sites around the country, with a focus on novel in situ biostimulation and bioaugmentation remediation practices. She also stressed the importance of including public opinion in the remediation process.

In addition, Dr. Lapat-Polasko met the UA SRP trainees for lunch, and took the time to speak with each student in turn about his or her work. During her seminar, she called on students to not just “be robots,” but to take an active role in the interpretation of their own data. She also encouraged them to “stay on top of tools and know how to use them” when they find themselves working at real-world sites one day.

Thanks for a great season-opener, Laurie!
