Moreno Ramírez Presents on Pesticide Module at Entomology Conference

April 1, 2014

Denise Moreno Ramírez, Community Engagement Coordinator for the University of Arizona Superfund Research Program, was invited to present at the 2014 Entomological Society of America Pacific Branch Meeting. The meeting was held April 6-9, 2014, in Tucson, AZ. Moreno Ramírez was part of a symposium entitled, “Communicating Entomology to the Public.” She was invited to present because of her expertise in communicating science and public health information to US-Mexico Border communities. In addition to her presentation, “Communicating Pesticide Information through Transferable Training Modules to Hispanic Community Health Workers,” the session including talks on making insect-related education fun, interactive, or practical, and communicating insect science to various audiences, from kids to the press. Although she does not consider herself an insect expert, Moreno Ramírez enjoyed the conference, saying she was glad to “learn more about various educational strategies, as well as some fascinating information about the bugs themselves.” In one exciting talk about bed bugs, the presenters passed around a jar of living specimens… which somehow got lost!

What an exciting foray into a new discipline!
