Raina Maier and Colleagues Honored with Catapult Award

March 24, 2014

Dr. Raina Maier, University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) Director and Project 9 investigator, was recently honored with a Catapult Award. Maier and her UA colleagues, Drs. Jeanne Pemberton, Cliff Coss, and Robin Polt were recognized at a Tech Launch Arizona reception on March 24, 2014. They were honored with the Catapult Award for Chemistry and Physical Sciences for their work developing microbially-produced surfactants (biosurfactants), which they are commercializing through a start-up chemical company, “GlycoSurf.”

Tech Launch Arizona provides a mechanism for turning UA research into intellectual property, inventions, and technology. The Catapult Awards were developed to recognize and honor the application of innovative UA research to improve the lives of people in Arizona and around the world. Individuals and teams received awards in six different categories.

Maier’s early research on biosurfactant-metal interactions was funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences Superfund Research Program. This research was focused on microbial glycolipids and the results were foundational for current GlycoSurf endeavors.

Congratulations, Raina!
