Sahar Fathordoobadi is an Invited Speaker in SRP Trainee Webinar

May 20, 2013

On May 2, 2013, Sahar Fathordoobadi, a doctoral student studying with Dr. Wendell Ela in the University of Arizona (UA) Superfund Research Program (SRP) was an invited speaker in the “2013 Superfund Research Program Trainee Webinar Series” sponsored by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences. This series was developed to feature graduate and post-doctoral trainees performing SRP-funded research. Ms. Fathordoobadi and the other speakers in the series are previous Poster Award Winners from the SRP Annual Meeting in 2012.

Ms. Fathordoobadi described her work on “How Arsenic Fate is Coupled to Sulfur Biomineral Formation in Landfills.” She is investigating the weathering of arsenic-bearing solid residuals which are disposed in landfills. Using flow-through laboratory-scale columns to simulate the conditions found in a mature landfill, she is examining the degree to which sulfate can prevent arsenic from leaching through biomineralization.

“I was stressed at the beginning, not knowing my audience,” says Ms. Fathordoobadi, “but I really enjoyed giving a webinar talk. I had a great experience and am thankful for this unique opportunity to share my research with a group of experts through the SRP program.”
