SRP and Binational Center Participates in TCE Teacher Symposium

On January 20, 2011, Dr. A. Jay Gandolfi, Dr. Mark L. Brusseau, Monica Ramirez-Andreotta, and Denise Moreno participated in the “TCE Teacher Professional Development Symposium.”  The University of Arizona (UA) Southwest Environmental Health Science Center and Sunnyside School District coordinated this symposium.  The goal was to provide district high school teachers with information regarding contamination and clean-up of the Tucson International Airport Area Superfund Site for which a major contaminant is trichloroethene (TCE).  It also introduced them to the TCE Contamination and Cleanup Curriculum developed for area schools:

In addition to personnel from the UA’s Superfund Research Program (SRP) and the Dean Carter Binational Center, speakers included: Airport Authority engineers, Tucson Water representatives, US Environmental Protection Agency community involvement professionals, private environmental consultants, and other researchers involved in environmental fate and transport/environmental health studies.  Dr. Gandolfi greeted the teachers and discussed the involvement of the UA SRP at the site.  Dr. Brusseau provided an overview of the work he has been involved with for the past 20 years focused on fate and transport investigations of the TCE contaminant plumes.  Mrs. Ramirez-Andreotta and Ms. Moreno provided a joint presentation on TCE environmental health information and hydrological concepts of watersheds respectively.
