Feb. 15, 2013

University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) graduate trainee Corin Hammond received a scholarship from the Phoenix chapter of ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) for the 2013-2014 school year. The scholarship will provide graduate tuition, travel funds, and a stipend.

The ARCS Foundation is a national non-profit organization founded in 1958 to advance science and technology in the U.S. by funding academically outstanding students. The Phoenix chapter is one of 17 chapters nationwide, currently has 82 members, and has awarded more than $4.5 million to 784 scholars since it was chartered in 1975. The Phoenix ARCS chapter works to provide “a way in which the business, education, civic and social members of our community may combine their interests and efforts to achieve a strong contribution to our future and to America’s youth through the advancement of scientific education.”

Ms. Hammond is a doctoral student training with UA SRP Investigator Dr. Jon Chorover. Her graduate work is focused on characterizing the biogeochemical transformation of metal(loid)s during phytostabilization of mine tailings, and is based on field work at the Iron King Mine Humboldt Smelter Superfund site in Dewey-Humboldt, AZ. On becoming an ARCS Scholar, Ms. Hammond says, “I am so fortunate to be selected by the ARCS Phoenix chapter to receive this financial support. It is an inspiration to see our community leaders finance higher education and research that leads to a more sustainable future.”

Congratulations, Corin!
