Trainee Fei Zhao Wins Poster Award

Sept. 5, 2012

University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) pre-doctoral trainee Fei Zhao was recently awarded First Place in the student poster session at the Mountain West Society of Toxicology 30th Annual Regional Chapter Fall Meeting. The meeting was held October 4-5, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mr. Zhao presented his studies on “Autophagy Requirements in an Arsenic-Transformed Bladder Cancer Model.” He is using a cell culture model of bladder cancer to study the effects of low-level arsenic exposure on a process called autophagy, a cellular degradation pathway that recycles damaged and superfluous proteins and organelles. His work is performed under the mentorship of UA SRP Investigator Dr. Walt Klimecki, and sheds light on the role of autophagy in the development of bladder cancer induced by chronic arsenic exposure.

Congratulations on your award, Fei!
