Trainee Linnea Herbertson Receives Scholarship
Congratulations to Linnea Herbertson, UA SRP Training Core Fellow, who was just awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the Great Lakes National Scholarship Program. This program provides financial assistance for qualified students who are pursuing careers in the STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) disciplines.
Linnea was born in Chicago but has been in Tucson since high school. She has a BS (2001) from the UA in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. After graduating, she worked in a microbial ecology laboratory in California and has spent time in competitive bicycling.
Since the spring of 2012, Linnea is a Master’s student in the Soil Water and Environmental Science Department (SWES) working under the direction of Dr. Raina Maier. She is working on the UA SRP phytostabilization project at the Iron King Mine and Humboldt Superfund site examining plant-root-microbial interactions and metal uptake using a combination of fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and x-ray spectroscopy (XAS) analysis.
In her spare time, she enjoys reading, yoga, running, bicycling, hiking and spending time outdoors.
