Trainee Moreno Ramirez Receives Scholarship from City of Tucson

March 22, 2017

The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) is delighted to announce that trainee, Denise Moreno Ramirez, has received a scholarship from the City of Tucson’s Water Department. This scholarship leverages a recently awarded Carson Scholarship and will help support her dissertation research at the Tucson International Airport Area (TIAA) Superfund site. Moreno Ramirez’s project focuses on preserving the life histories of people working and living next to hazardous contamination. She will capture these histories via video interviews as well as personal photographs. This project was co-created with community members at the TIAA Unified Community Advisory Board (UCAB) and has expanded to the Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter site. Tucson Water Administrator Jeff Biggs presented Moreno Ramirez with the scholarship award at the January 18, 2017 TIAA UCAB quarterly meeting. "Tucson Water values and supports education for our youth, researchers, and the community," said Timothy Thomure, Tucson Water Director. UA SRP Director Raina Maier who also serves as co-advisor for Moreno Ramirez stated: “Denise exemplifies our outstanding Training Core students who take advantage of all opportunities that come available to support their research”.
