Trainee Success Story: Dr. Hazel Cox

July 30, 2013

Dr. Hazel Cox, former University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) trainee, has accepted a position with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). As an ADEQ Hydrologist, she will aid in understanding the hydrology of contaminated sites around the Tucson area that are regulated by ADEQ. Her work will help project managers create and establish remedial plans for these sites.

When asked how she feels about her new position, Dr. Cox said, “I'm very excited to start this position; it's exactly what I hoped to do with my life. I went to graduate school to learn about contaminant hydrology so I could eventually work to help clean up environmental pollution.”

As a graduate student in the department of Soil, Water, and Environmental Science (SWES), Dr. Cox worked with UA SRP investigator Dr. Mark Brusseau (Project 6), studying transport mechanisms of titanium dioxide nanoparticles in porous media. After her graduation in August, 2012, she continued in the lab as a research specialist, before gaining teaching experience as an adjunct instructor for SWES. Having “fallen in love with Tucson” during graduate school, she is very happy to remain here. Says Cox, “to be a part of the remediation of contaminated sites around the Tucson area will be extremely satisfying, to say the least.”

Congratulations and best of luck in your new position, Hazel!
