UA SBRP participates in Tucson International Airport Dedication Ceremony and Tour

Nov. 5, 2007

UA SBRP Program Coordinators, Denise Moreno Ramirez and Monica Ramirez distributed informational materials and answered the public’s questions regarding remediation strategies and TCE health effects at the Tucson International Airport Area (TIAA) Superfund site’s Dedication Ceremony and Tour of the Three Hangars Soil and Groundwater Treatment Facility on November 5, 2007.

The dedication ceremony was hosted by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) and Tucson Airport Authority to honor the Three Hangers Treatment Plant, where 11 new groundwater extraction wells and 7 new soil vapor extraction wells have been drilled.  In the plant’s first year of operation, 34 million gallons of water have been treated and over 30,000 pounds of contaminants have been removed.

Ms. Moreno and Ms. Ramirez have attended the TIAA’s Community Advisory Board meetings over the past two years, where they have been providing informational materials and presentations on the UA SBRP and chlorinated solvents such as Trichloroethylene and 1,4 Dioxane. The UA SBRP Research Translation and Community Outreach Cores will continue to be an invaluable resource to the community and government agencies such as the USEPA and ADEQ.
