UA SRP at the 2012 National Latino Cancer Summit

The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) was well represented at the 3rd Biannual 2012 National Latino Cancer Summit from July 23 – 25, 2012 in San Francisco, California. UA SRP Investigator Dr. Paloma Beamer was part of the organizing committee for the summit. In addition, she moderated the “Migrants, Farmworkers and Pesticide” panel.  Denise Moreno Ramírez, UA SRP Community Engagement Core Coordinator, was invited to speak about her work on pollution prevention interventions targeting small business in Tucson, Arizona. Anastasia Sugeng, UA SRP Training Core Student, presented her work on agricultural pesticide hazard rankings for chronic health effects in Yuma, Arizona respectively.  While in San Francisco, Moreno Ramírez was also invited to speak at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) Live at Region 9/Pollution Prevention brown bag.  Approximately 20 US EPA representatives attended this talk.  

The National Latino Cancer Summit, convened by Latinas Contra Cancer, brought together various governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, community health worker groups (promotoras), and university investigators.  The goal of the summit was to provide participants with information on the environment and its impact on the development of cancer in Latino populations in the United States.  Dr. Gwen Collman, director of the Division of Extramural Research and Training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, was one of the distinguished speakers providing a roundtable lunchtime conversation with attendees.
