UA SRP at the 2014 Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting

March 31, 2014

The 53rd Annual Meeting of the Society of Toxicology was held March 23-27, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ. The meeting brought together more than 6,500 toxicologists from more than 50 countries. A number of University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) investigators and trainees attended the meeting, participating in oral presentations, poster sessions, and other activities:

Congratulations to past UA SRP Training Core Fellow Fei Zhao (mentor, Walt Klimecki) who won a travel award from Seahorse Bioscience to present his poster on “Arsenic Induced Glycolysis During Malignant Transformation.”

A special Regional Interest Session, “When the Dust Settles: Exposure Assessment and Health Effects from Dust Exposures in the Arid Southwest,” was organized and chaired by UA SRP Associate Director Clark Lantz; speakers included himself and UA SRP investigator Miranda Loh. Session speakers presented data on exposure assessment and characterization of dusts from roads and legacy mines. Potential adverse health outcomes from Superfund mining sites were also discussed.

Congratulations to Dr. Lantz who was inducted as the Vice President-Elect of the Metals Specialty Section, replacing Dr. Klimecki, who is now the current Vice President.

Finally, Dr. Lantz, along with other SRP Directors took the opportunity to meet with Dr. Linda Birnbaum, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and NIEHS Program staff to discuss the Superfund Program. Says Lantz, “The Annual SOT meeting always provides a great opportunity to see current cutting-edge science and to connect with friends and colleagues”.
