UA SRP Attends 2012 Agua Fria Festival

Sept. 21, 2012

The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) recently attended the 108th Annual Agua Fria Festival, held October 6-7, 2012, in Dewey-Humboldt, AZ. Dewey-Humboldt is the site of the Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter Superfund site, where the contaminants of concern are primarily arsenic and lead in the mine tailings and smelter ash pile.

Research Translation Coordinator Sarah Wilkinson was joined by Metals Exposure Study in Homes (MESH) personnel Nathan Lothrop (Study Coordinator), Miranda Loh (PI), and Abby Peña (student), as well as the project local field technicians. Together, they provided information regarding metals, water, and mine tailings, as well as updates on UA SRP projects in the area.

New to our booth this year was a colorful spinning wheel, which children (and adults) were invited to spin and answer trivia on environmental topics such as air, water, and recycling – as well as corny jokes! The trivia wheel was a big hit, and we had a lot of fun!

We are already looking forward to next year’s festival!
