UA SRP Attends 2014 Agua Fria Festival

Oct. 4, 2014

The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) joined forces with state and federal agencies to provide educational activities and information related to drinking water at the 2014 Agua Fria Festival. Held in Dewey-Humboldt, AZ on October 4-5, the festival is a long-standing local tradition. The UA SRP has attended the festival a number of times in the last few years to provide information to the community on UA research regarding the neighboring Iron King Mine and Humboldt Smelter Superfund site and regarding studies that show the public water supply and a majority of private wells in the area have elevated levels of arsenic.

This year, the UA SRP partnered with representatives from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). Through a series of teleconferences we planned a “Safe Drinking Water Corner,” at which we offered a variety of fun and educational activities for kids, as well as important information for local residents on well water and other environmental issues. UA SRP personnel participating were: Research Translation Coordinator Dr. Sarah Wilkinson, water expert Dr. Janick Artiola, MESH investigator Dr. Paloma Beamer, Community Involvement Coordinator Denise Moreno Ramírez, and Training Core Fellow Lydia Jennings.

We enjoyed spending time with our agency partners, as well as interacting with local kids and adults!
