UA SRP attends AZ Mining Day at the Capitol 2015

Feb. 25, 2015

University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) research translation coordinator Dr. Sarah Wilkinson and trainee Linnea Honeker, along with collaborator Dr. Mary Poulton, Director of the UA Lowell Institute of Mineral Resources, represented the UA at the 2015 AZ Mining Day at the Capitol. The February 11, 2015 event was hosted by the Arizona Mining Association (AMA) and the Arizona Rock Products Association (ARPA). The goal of the event was to showcase the impacts of mining on Arizona, including employment opportunities and economic impacts. Participants included industry, state agencies and departments, legislative offices, and the public. Information and demonstration booths, and large equipment such as haul trucks, tires, and other mining equipment, were on display outside of the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, AZ.

The UA SRP was invited by the AMA and ARPA to participate as a result of increasing recognition in the mining industry of the importance of our research and outreach efforts to supporting responsible mining in Arizona. We hosted an information booth to provide information about the UA SRP, the Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining, and the Institute for Mineral Resources, and to provide information about education and specialized training opportunities in the area of mining at UA.
