UA SRP Director Touts NIEHS to Elected Officials

Aug. 1, 2013

Dr. Raina Maier, Director of the University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) recently had the opportunity to meet with U.S. Representative Raul Grijalva and Robert Brubaker, a regional representative from U.S. Senator Jeff Flake’s office. The meetings were coordinated by Dr. Shannon Heuberger who is a Core Constituent Scientist Team Leader for the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America. Dr. Maier and other scientists were there to advocate against cuts in science funding at the Federal level.

Dr. Maier took the opportunity to describe the work that the UA SRP is doing in Arizona to create a healthy environment for Arizona communities by addressing the major hazardous waste issues facing the desert Southwest. Notably, the UA SRP works at six of the nine Superfund sites in Arizona with the level of involvement ranging from community education, to support for regulatory agencies (including EPA, ATSDR, and our State agencies), to site exposure studies and field trials. Both congressional offices expressed interest in and support for UA SRP contributions and recognized that these contributions have been made possible by support from NIEHS.
