UA SRP in Mexico for Binational Events

Nov. 17, 2014

University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) Director Dr. Raina Maier travelled to Mexico for two binational events in November 2014. Dr. Maier delivered a plenary address at the 40th Anniversary of the La Estacion Regional del Noroeste (ERNO)-Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), held in Hermosillo, Mexico, November 17-18. Her presentation was entitled: “The University of Arizona Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining – developing partnerships with Mexico.” The  Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining (CESM) is an industry/academic cooperative created by the UA SRP in partnership with the UA Lowell Institute of Mineral Resources (IMR), a global center of excellence in mining.

On November 19, Dr. Maier attended a meeting of the UA-UNAM Consortium, also held in Hermosillo, Mexico. This consortium was developed to strengthen collaboration in research, teaching, and outreach in the drylands region of southwestern USA and northwest Mexico. At the meeting, Maier and her UNAM collaborator Francisco Molina presented results from their joint project “Phytostabilization of copper mine tailings in the Arizona-Sonora Region.” Based on their results, the team has been awarded a second round of funding for 2015.
