UA SRP researchers featured on AZ Illustrated

Aug. 1, 2012

University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) investigator Dr. Jim Field and graduate trainee Christopher Olivares of the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering were featured on the Arizona Illustrated public television news magazine in May, 2012. In an interview with Mark McLemore of Arizona Public Media, they spoke about their research studying the environmental fate of insensitive munitions, a new type of explosive, and how microorganisms can be used to detoxify them in the soil. They showed samples of bacterial cultures used in the lab to study the degradation of the munitions, and talked about the relevance of this issue to Arizona.

When asked what shooting for a television broadcast was like, Christopher explained, “I was a bit nervous but very happy that we got to participate in the interview. Everything was shot in a single take and was very quick, but I think that we got a chance to explain our current and future research.” He feels that this type of venue provides an excellent opportunity to make university research accessible to the local community.
