UA SRP Trainees Win Big at Earth Week 2014

April 11, 2014

Each year, the University of Arizona (UA) School of Earth and Environmental Sciences (SEES) hosts Earth Week, a joint conference organized by graduate students in the six SEES departments. And each year, UA Superfund Research Program (SRP) trainees get involved - planning, participating, and winning awards! This year the event was held April 8-11, 2014, in Tucson, AZ, and provided an opportunity for students to share their research with peers, faculty, industry representatives, and the University of Arizona community.

A number of graduate and undergraduate students from the laboratories of UA SRP investigators participated in the multi-day event. UA SRP Trainee Michael Stovern (Atmospheric Sciences; mentor Eric Betterton) was co-chair of the Earth Week conference, as well as co-chair of the “AIR” sessions. Trainee Juliana Gil-Loaiza (Soil, Water, and Environmental Science (SWES); mentor Raina Maier) was involved in organizing the “SWESx” session and gave the plenary address. Trainee Linnea Herbertson (SWES; mentor Raina Maier) gave an oral presentation in the SWESx session.

As always, UA SRP trainees received awards for their research presentations. Trainee Christopher Olivares (Chemical and Environmental Engineering; mentor Jim Field) won First Place Graduate Oral Presentation. Undergraduates Yadi Wang (mentor Jon Chorover) and Catherine Gullo (mentor Raina Maier) won Second Place Undergraduate Oral Presentation and Third Place Undergraduate Poster Presentation Awards, respectively, for their work on the UA SRP Phytostabilization project.

Congratulations, and keep up the great work!
