UA SRP well represented at Exposure Science Conference

Oct. 12, 2014

This year’s International Society of Exposure Science (ISES) Annual Meeting was held Oct 12-16, 2014 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The theme of the meeting was Exposure Science Integration to Protect Ecological Systems, Human Well-Being, and Occupational Health. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) was well-represented at the conference, presenting on a variety of topics:

UA SRP investigator Miranda Loh served on the Technical Organizing Committee and chaired the “Biomarkers and Metabolomics” sessions.

Trainee Anastasia Sugeng presented two posters related to her work with agricultural pesticides and farmworkers, and served on the New Students and Researchers Committee with her mentor and UA SRP investigator Paloma Beamer.

Dr. Beamer chaired the “Global Health: Exposures from Cookstoves” session.

UA SRP Metals Exposure Study in Homes coordinator Nathan Lothrop presented two posters, including “Developing Community-Engaged Results Report-back Materials for an Environmental Exposure Study in a Rural Arizona Community near a Superfund Site.” He particularly enjoyed discussing results communication with Heather Henry from the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences.

Congratulations to Yoshira Ornelas, a UA SRP graduate trainee, who won Honorable Mention for her poster! She presented her work with investigator Paloma Beamer, on “Microbial and Inorganic Contamination in Private Wells along the Santa Cruz River, Arizona.” This honor was one of only 5 given to more than 50 poster presenters.

Says award winner Yoshira, “this conference was a good opportunity to discuss exposure topics with experts and gives young researchers a chance to meet outstanding leading researchers in the field."
