The University of Arizona Superfund Research Center (UA SRC) Receives 5-year Renewal

April 6, 2020

We announce the renewal of The University of Arizona Superfund Research Center (UA SRC) which addresses the unique human health risks encountered in the US Southwest, an area with a rich history and future of mining. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Center (UA SRC) has been continually funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) since 1989. Under the direction of Dr. Raina Maier, the UA SRC has received a 5-year renewal that will allow this effort to continue through 2025.

The UA SRC brings together an outstanding team of biomedical and environmental scientists to understand how chronic exposure to mine wastes that contain arsenic contributes to the development of diabetes and associated metabolic disease and to develop remediation technology to prevent exposures. Center results will both reduce risk and inform risk assessment tools that can be used to predict exposures and associated health outcomes. Research translation and community engagement efforts will be focused on informing public health prevention and interventions in communities that neighbor mine waste sites.

The UA SRC is comprised of five projects and four support cores (Figure 1). The UA SRC involves the collaboration of 18 Investigators from five colleges at the University of Arizona (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Public Health, College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy and College of Science).
