Neilson and Maier present EPA Clu-In Webinar on Revegetation

Aug. 12, 2020

Drs. Julia Neilson and Raina Maier tag-teamed to present an EPA Clu-In webinar entitled “Revegetation of Mine Wastes in Arid Environments: Linking Above- and Below-Ground Performance” on August 12, 2020. They discussed results from more than a decade of research that is part of the University of Arizona NIEHS Superfund Research Center (UA SRC) in partnership with the University of Arizona Center for Environmentally Sustainable Mining (UA CESM). The webinar focused on the relationship between below-ground soil metrics and revegetation success under a variety of conditions and revegetation approaches. They presented data from both legacy and modern waste sites examining both direct planting into mine waste and cap and plant scenarios. Finally, they discussed the development of long-term relationships with mining companies and how such interactions can help identify the research questions that will have the most impact on mining practices.
