UA SRC Trainee Collaborates to Design an Environmental Health Mapping Tool for Visualizing Resiliency in Arizona Communities

May 5, 2022

Alma Anides Morales, graduate student in Environmental Science, is working with the Research Translation Core to design an online environmental health mapping tool exclusive to the state of Arizona.

This mapping tool, HOWL (Health Opportunity Wellness Landscape), brings together local, state, and federal datasets along with community-based citizen science collected data to paint a picture of the environmental health challenges Arizona communities face.

Arizona residents were able to express what factors contribute to or deter their community’s resilience – its ability to bounce back – through an online Community Needs and Assets survey. Their input will inform vulnerability and resiliency indices in HOWL to assist community members, policymakers, and researchers visualize and address environmental health disparities in the state.
