Tomasz Wlodarczyk receives the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from the Department of Environmental Science

Tomasz Wlodarczyk received the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award from the Department of Environmental Science for his dissertation titled From Samples to Sensors: Integrating Field, Analytical, And Spectral Tools for Sustainable Phytoremediation in Arid Landscapes. The award-winning dissertation investigated vegetation recovery and plant metal(loid) accumulation in mining-impacted dryland ecosystems. By integrating ecological field surveys, X-ray fluorescence analysis, and hyperspectral sensing, Wlodarczyk’s research developed new approaches for identifying metal-accumulating plants and monitoring plant responses to metals across laboratory and ecosystem scales. This work contributes to the development of rapid, non-destructive tools for evaluating ecosystem recovery and advancing phytomining strategies in the U.S. Southwest.
