The article explores a vision of mining that works more like agriculture: instead of blasting and excavating vast amounts of rock, future mines could use biological processes—such as specially selected plants or microbes—to grow, concentrate, and harvest valuable minerals in a more controlled, renewable way. While the approach is still emerging, researchers argue it could reduce environmental damage, waste, and carbon emissions while making it possible to recover critical minerals from lower-grade ores and even mine waste, helping meet the growing demand for materials needed in the clean energy transition and remediate metals from mining waste that can be harmful to public health.
