DUST Center Spotlight on PBS’ Arizona Horizon
Drs. Xinxin Ding and Raina Maier on set of Arizona Horizon with host Ted Simons
DUST Center Director Xinxin Ding and Associate Director Raina Maier were interviewed on PBS television show Arizona Horizon. They explained how exposure to particulate matter in dust can affect human health especially in dry regions like Arizona. They noted that dust particulates can contain heavy metals and fungal spores that can compound these health effects. The DUST Center’s four research projects work to better understand and address these concerns with a combination of biologically-focused studies using cell and mouse models (Projects 1 & 2), advanced dust characterization (Project 3) and revegetation strategies to reduce dust emissions (Project 4).
