Dr. Raina Maier, University of Arizona Superfund Research Program (UA SRP) investigator and Director, participated in a legislative briefing on mining at the UA San Xavier Mining Laboratory on March 25, 2014. The briefing was moderated by UA Associate Vice President for Federal Relations Shay Stautz. In Dr. Maier’s discussion on Environmental Stewardship, she provided an overview of the Superfund Research Program and our research efforts on mining related to important environmental issues such as managing mining wastes, and water and air resources. Other presentations by UA SRP collaborators Mary Poulton, Mark Barton, and Jeff Burgess included overviews of national and state issues for mineral resources development related to: mineral supply and demand; resources in Arizona; worker health and safety; and workforce development. Attendees included representatives from the offices of US Senators McCain and Flake, as well as US Representatives Barber, Franks, Grijalva, Kirkpatrick, and Salmon. The presentations were followed by a tour of the UA San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory, a teaching mine that is used as a training and research facility for UA students and researchers, federal and state agencies, mining organizations, and the general public.
